What a VPN does—and what it does not

A consumer VPN routes selected internet traffic through an encrypted connection to a VPN server. Websites generally see that server’s public IP address instead of your usual public IP. That changes the route your traffic takes and who you must trust.

Where the protection starts and ends

The tunnel protects traffic between your device and the VPN server. HTTPS separately protects a web connection to the website. Keep using HTTPS even when connected to a VPN. A VPN does not make every connection beyond its server encrypted.

It does not erase your identity

Signing into a marketplace account still tells that marketplace which account you are using. Cookies, browser fingerprinting and information you submit can also connect activity to you. A changed IP address does not make those signals disappear. The Electronic Frontier Foundation cautions against treating a VPN as complete anonymity or a universal security solution.

Match the tool to the task

For a seller working from a shared network, a VPN can provide an additional privacy layer for routed traffic. It does not stop a convincing phishing message or secure a compromised device. Strong unique passwords, multi-factor authentication and software updates still matter.

A practical decision

Write down what you want to protect and from whom before shopping. “Reduce what the local network can observe” is a clearer requirement than “be secure.” If the main concern is a stolen marketplace password, address account protection first. If you need remote access to a home printer, a commercial browsing VPN is a different service from a private remote-access network.
