VPN connected, printer missing? Check local network access

Keep local printer access separate from internet traffic routing.

If a printer disappears immediately after connecting a VPN, the print job itself may be fine. The VPN app’s local-network rules can be the problem. Devices on your local area network need a route to one another; some VPN configurations restrict that route.

Establish a baseline

On your trusted home network, confirm that the computer and printer are connected and that the printer is reachable before starting the VPN. Reconnect the VPN and repeat the same check. This comparison helps isolate a VPN-related change without treating every discovery problem as a VPN failure.

Look for a local-network setting

Check the provider’s documentation for an option such as “Allow LAN connections.” Proton’s support guide describes this feature for connecting to devices such as printers and media servers while internet traffic uses the VPN. Availability and controls differ by platform and plan.

Use exceptions deliberately

Allow local access only on a network you trust. Follow the app’s documented setting rather than disabling unrelated protections. If the app supports app-based or address-based exclusions, verify which traffic the exception affects. Test both internet connectivity and printer access after the change.

Remote access is a separate question

A consumer VPN connection to a provider’s server does not automatically place you inside your home network. Printing from away from home may require a manufacturer-supported service or a private remote-access setup. Do not expose a printer’s administration page directly to the public internet to solve a local discovery issue.

Record what worked

Keep a brief note of the operating system, VPN app version, local-network setting and printer address. That makes it easier to recover after an update. If discovery still fails, consult the printer and VPN support documentation using those specific details.
